A better desk does not need to be empty. It needs to make the next task easy to start.
Keep the center clear
Your primary work area should have enough open space for your keyboard, notebook or current task. Avoid letting rarely used objects occupy the center permanently.
Create a charging zone
Give phones, earbuds and other rechargeable devices one predictable place. This keeps cables from migrating across the desk.
Route cables deliberately
Permanent cables should follow one path behind or below the desk. Temporary charging cables should stay accessible without falling to the floor.
Limit what lives on the desktop
If you use an item several times a day, it probably belongs within reach. If you use it once a month, it probably does not.
Use one catch-all, not five
A small tray or organizer for loose items is useful. Multiple catch-all areas usually become multiple clutter zones.
Keep supplies where they are used
Store pens, adapters, notebooks and accessories close to the task they support. Good organization reduces unnecessary movement and searching.
End the day with a two-minute reset
Return loose items, plug in devices, clear cups and papers, and leave the desk ready for the next session.
